![]() ![]() But it's traditional in Zen to just accept the colors of the rainbow as what they are, not needing to explain them. What are colors anyway? How do they have the Quality that they do? Red isn't blue-er than yellow. In a similar way, I was perplexed for a long time by why the colors of the rainbow were the way they were and not other colors that we can't imagine. Then the cook came over and kicked it over. He put out a pitcher and asked, what is this? A monk said, “It's not wood”. A master, Xuyun, was so good he had 100s of students. I think a few more stories would help, before we get back to the koan on the sound of one hand clapping. A quality of being what you are, and not separating yourself from yourself or from the Universe flowing through you. It's just funny (it has a quality of being humorous). That just ruins the joke (because it has become intellectual). You don't think about explaining a joke with words. The ordinary mind of clear headed attention to washing your bowl, and really becoming that action fully, is the true mind. For instance, a student said to Joshu, “I've been here a while and no one has told me anything.” Joshu replied “Then go re-wash your bowl”. Zen is referred to as the “barrier with no gate”, or “the gateless gate”. The friend said, “I haven't understood a word of it, but it's cheered me up enormously”. I mean that.” Alan Watts gave a book of dialogue of the interchange between student and master to a friend. Hasegawa said, “It may take you 3 seconds. For example, contemplative prayer in Christianity takes a long time and a guide. Zen is notable for it's occurrence of sudden insight into something that's supposed to take years and years. One master described practicing these dignities as, “When hungry eat, when tired sleep.” It's about acting while you act. When you do these four, it is possible to maintain the state of Zen. These are: walking zen, standing zen, sitting zen, and lying zen. In a way, Zen is spiritual ophthalmology. Zen is a field of inquiry, as a physicists might look into how the Universe works at it's most basic level. It's not really a framework of moralized rules. Zen isn't a serious practice, but it is sincere. There's an appeal of Zen in the West because of its unusual kind of humor. It's direct pointing into one's own mind, seeing the Buddha mind. There is no dependence on words and letters. He described Zen as a mode of transmission apart from religious texts. And philosophy means the pursuit of the kingdom of reason.Īlan watts was an excellent ambassador of Zen and Eastern thought in the West (Alan Watts Youtube video: Zen). ![]() ![]() Because it isn't graspable by the intellect. Zen could also be thought of as anti philosophy. But at the same time, how could it be separate from the causes that made it outside itself (evolution, culture, free will of choices of your past or the past of those you interact with). On the other hand, “not one” rejects non-dualism because it disagrees with the practitioner being whole as one. Or the positionless position where “not two” means a negation of the belief that you can cut the whole (of the universe as it is manifesting as you now) in two. There is also the idea of “not one” and “not two”. Zen is simple and straightforward in getting at reality and acting in the here and now because it believes that thing-events that are happening before on'es eyes or under ones foot is the very manifestation of “suchness”. The process of discovering wisdom causes an experiential change where the thing-event is perceived differently. Zen teaching is of non-discriminatory wisdom (Stanford Education: Japanese Zen Buddhist Philosophy). ![]() ![]() The cookie is set by the GDPR Cookie Consent plugin and is used to store whether or not user has consented to the use of cookies. Today’s result will trigger intensive discussions among the theoretical physics community. It is, however, interesting to note that some NP models predict R(Λ c +) significanly higher or significantly below its SM values even after taking into account the present R(D*) and R(J/ψ) central values. Today’s result is in good agreement with the SM prediction and its central value is located below the SM prediction. These contributions include: i) the idea of a new lepton in the GeV mass. Finally, the new result presented today is shown in the lowest part of the image. The middle part shows the result of LHCb measurement of the R(J/ψ), the ratio of branching fractions between B c +→J/ψτ +ν τ and B c +→J/ψμ +ν μ using τ +→ μ +ν μ ν τ decays, see the 13 September 2017 news. In this way the value of lepton universality variable R(Λ c +) was calculated to be The rate or “branching fraction”of this decay (B(Λ b 0→ Λ c +τ –ν τ)) was then compared with the corresponding one where the τ lepton is replaced by a muon, measured by the DELPHI experiment at CERN. The statistical significance of the signal is about six standard deviations, making this the first observation of this decay. The 3-pion decay, only exploited by LHCb up to now, has two advantages: the precise measurement of τ lepton decay point which enables a very strong background rejection, and the exploitation of the dynamics of the 3 pion system which helps to distinguish tau decays from backgrounds in which the 3 pions are coming from charmed meson decays.Ī selection algorithm based on a boosted decision tree is used to separate about 350 Λ b 0→ Λ c +τ –ν τ events from the background. The decay of the τ lepton produces these three pions along with a neutrino (ν τ) and sometimes an additional neutral pion, neither of which are reconstructed in this analysis. The τ leptons are formed from π –π +π – meson combinations. But the game isn't all that difficult, and a little perseverance should get you past any roadblocks, metaphorical or not. That's not to say it never gets annoying because of the linear race progression, you'll sometimes get stuck on a timed mission objective that you'll have to replay until you get it right. ![]() And because the collisions rarely force you into a frustrating situation, and the physics model is so open-ended, and there are so many silly power-ups, Carmageddon II ends up being entertaining for a long time. Thankfully, you can magically repair or recover your car at the touch of a button, and for a price. You'll find yourself in all sorts of incredible and ridiculous wrecks, often with those hapless pedestrians at the center. Either objective is made both challenging and enjoyable thanks to the wacky hyperrealistic physics model behind the game that has cars careening through the air and against buildings and one another at the slightest invitation. You can race around the track past a series of checkpoints through several laps and end a race, but you'll often find it easier (and a lot more fun) to total all the enemy cars vying to do the same. Like the first game, you don't need to follow too many rules. In any event, you'll probably be too wrapped up in the game to be bothered. Unfortunately, the other sound effects in the game are only fair, as pedestrian screams and steel wrenching against steel all start to get repetitive fast. And the carnage is set to the perfectly appropriate music of the quintessential heavy metal band Iron Maiden, as well as a few guitar-heavy instrumental pieces that, while they aren't Maiden, aren't bad. You'll pick up dozens of different power-ups that affect the innocent bystanders in absurdly hilarious ways: They'll explode when hit, pop and fly away, dance in place, stumble like drunks, have huge heads, turn huge altogether, turn tiny, turn fat, turn tall, turn skinny, turn completely immortal - you name it. But if the country can embrace a foul-mouthed and foul-mannered prime-time cartoon show, then it's ready for Carmageddon II. Were it not for the rather plain-looking tracks and a frame rate that can falter even on high-end systems, Carmageddon II would look entirely excellent. They'll come apart at the seams, go flying through the air, burst into blood and guts, and worse as you careen into them in every which way, earning money for each and every kill. But now the pedestrians, comprising a cornucopia of humans and wildlife, join their hunters in the third dimension, which unlocks a world of gory, new opportunities for the player. Then again, the cars in Carmageddon always did look good, although the same couldn't be said for their targets, the lowly pedestrians who were mere 2D sprites in the first game and didn't look right against the 3D cars. They're not real cars, but they look real enough, especially when you smash them (or into them) and they crumple and crack in all the right places. The three dozen-odd cars are meticulously detailed and wildly creative: You get to drive and destroy everything from a tricked-out '70s low-rider sporting front-mounted jackhammers, to a muscle car crossed with a World War II prop plane, to a dragster, to a dune buggy, and much more. You'll need to be at least a little mean-spirited to truly appreciate them, but Carmageddon II's graphics look good by any standards. However, if you're not adverse to a little lowbrow humor and a lot of violence and mayhem, you'll find plenty of action and still more fun in the visually refined sequel. Well, if you're the sort to play a game and apply those skills you've just cultivated to your real-life routine, then not only should you not come anywhere near Carmageddon II, but you should probably just be locked up somewhere safe. The original Carmageddon was banned in Brazil for inspiring road rage. ![]() ![]() ![]() It would definitely be strange for a speaker to approach an audience member and pick lint off his or her sweater, fix a crooked tie, tuck a tag in, or pat down a flyaway hair in the middle of a speech.Įmblems are gestures that have a specific agreed-on meaning.
